A value chain holds different stages, from production of the agricultural raw material, processing, to product marketing. Different models of organisation of the value chain exist. Some stages can be integrated in a common decision-making structure (like a farmers’ or a consumers’ cooperative), or coordinated (through contracts, or an overarching cooperative). At the horizontal level, collectives at a same stage of the value chain can either be integrated (when farmers’ cooperatives merge) or coordinate themselves (e.g. to align their strategies). The relevance of these models according to political, cultural and institutional context, strategy, existing networks, past trajectories, collectivities involved (farmers, processors, consumers), etc. My interest lies in studying how a given cooperative model can be performant in a given context, that is, by supporting the long-term commitment of the farmers and other members and ensuring a sustainable value chain development and dialogue.
