Before becoming a researcher, Heleen Mees was an experienced marketeer in the fast moving consumer goods industry. After 15 years of experience in global brand development in various international project leader roles (incl. Unilever), she decided to dedicate the second half of her working life to a good cause she has always been passionate about: the environment. In 2010 she started an academic career as researcher of sustainability issues at Utrecht university, where she obtained her Doctor's degree in 2014. Her field of expertise is local (urban) governance, with a focus on climate change governance. Her current research interests are in the roles of citizens and communities in climate change governance. Heleen teaches in various MSc and BSc courses at Utrecht University, such as for instance Research Strategies, Research Skills, Governance Theories for Sustainable Development, Politics of the Earth, Sustainable Land Use. She regularly supervises MSc and BSc thesis projects.
